Book One, No Clean Reckoning, is published. In Book Two, No Act of God, James Hawthorne learns what the coast has already begun to teach him: that a trade which cannot be reached by a blow may still be reached by the law. Freetown, 1810. A court, a ledger, and men who have never seen a beach.

You will have two things at once. The opening chapters of No Act of God, and the working bibliography behind Book One: what was checked, what could not be established, and why certain men in those pages are never named.

After that, nothing much. A few letters a year, when there is something worth saying, and word before anyone else when the next book is ready. You may leave whenever you like.
